Rubber process oil

whether synthetic or natural, is widely utilized in the production of a wide range of rubber-based products, spanning from rubber bands and toys to large-scale tires for various vehicles, including aircraft. These oils play a crucial role in the mixing of rubber compounds.

The composition of rubber process oil exhibits a kinematic viscosity ranging from 25 to 50 CST at 100 °C, with a content of less than 3% of polynuclear aromatic compounds. Particularly in the case of aromatic rubbers, these polynuclear aromatic compounds are employed as process oil for rubber compounds.

The application of rubber process oil extends throughout the mixing of rubber compounds. Its primary function is to enhance the dispersion of fillers and improve the flow characteristics of the compound during various processing stages.

Qatran Pars rubber process oil is a specially developed formulation that takes into consideration the type of rubber used and the intended applications of the final product.

This process oil is compatible with aromatic rubbers while containing fewer toxic polynuclear aromatic compounds compared to conventional aromatic RPOs. By employing this oil composition, rubber products of satisfactory quality can be produced.

Uses of rubber process oil:

Rubber process oil serves as a crucial component in various rubber formulations and the manufacturing of numerous products, including:

  1. Automobile tires
  2. Rubber shock absorbers
  3. Footwear
  4. Industrial hoses
  5. Wire and cable coverings
  6. Flooring materials
  7. Carrier fluid in the production of adhesives
  8. Sealants
  9. Polishes
  10. Carbon black

There are three different types of rubber process oils:

  1. Aromatic oils: Aromatic oils are characterized by the presence of a double-bonded mixed-ring carbon structure. They are known for their viscosity, which complies with ASTM D-445 standards. Aromatic oils come in different grades, such as high (heavy), medium, and low (light) viscosity, including TDAE, MES, and DAE.
Aromatic furfural extract rubber process oil (RPO) is sourced from selected refineries and blended to meet stringent specifications. It is used in compounding batches for the production of tires, lactic, automotive tires and tubes, bicycle tires, tire retreading materials, belting, hoses, battery casings and containers, extruded products, technical molded goods, and rubber articles with reclaim rubber. Aromatic process oil offers high solvency, color stability, solubility, and good thermal stability. It is also used in calendared and molded sheets, as well as Tread rubber TDAE oil.
  2. Paraffinic oils: Paraffinic oils consist of branched chain or straight linked hydrocarbon molecules with varying viscosities. As the chain length increases, the viscosity of the rubber process oil also increases, making it more viscous. Paraffinic oils are commonly used in ethylene-propylene rubbers. They offer stability and have a high flash point for a given viscosity.
  3. Naphthenic oil: Naphthenic oil belongs to a category of hydrocarbons known as “cycloparaffins.” Although their structure resembles an aromatic ring, they have single bonds, resulting in a stable structure. There are various grades available, as multiple hydrocarbon rings can be linked. Naphthenic oils are valued for their color stability, solubility, and good thermal stability. They are commonly used in the production of molded articles, slippers, LPG tubes, floor tiles, and other applications.

Packing of Rubber Process Oil:

Rubber process oil is packaged in various forms to accommodate different transportation and storage requirements. The packaging options for rubber process oil include:

  1. 180 kg drums: Rubber process oil is commonly packed in 180 kg drums, which can be either new or used. These drums provide a convenient and standard packaging solution for smaller quantities of the oil.
  2. ISO tank: For larger quantities of rubber process oil, ISO tanks are used. ISO tanks are large, cylindrical containers designed for transportation by road, rail, or sea. They have a capacity of several thousand liters, allowing for efficient handling and bulk shipments.
  3. Flexi tanks: Flexi tanks are flexible containers that can hold a significant volume of rubber process oil. They are typically made of multiple layers of high-strength materials to ensure durability and prevent leakage. Flexi tanks offer a cost-effective solution for transporting large quantities of the oil.
  4. Bulk shipments: In some cases, rubber process oil is transported in bulk shipments, without specific packaging. This method is typically used for very large quantities of the oil, where it is loaded directly into the designated storage or transportation vessel.

Regarding containerized shipments, it is worth noting that each 20-foot container can accommodate approximately 80 drums of rubber process oil. This information is provided as a guideline to estimate the number of drums that can fit within a standard container size.
